In the northern region of Bangladesh, in the Rangpur Division, sits the Kurigram District.West Bengal of India is bordered to the north by the Cooch Behar district, the south by the Gaibandha district, the east by the Asam Province of India, and the west by the districts of Rangpur and Lalmonirhat. 1874 saw the creation of the Kurigram subdivision, which became a district in 1984. The district is made up of 1907 villages, 647 mouzas, 122 mahallas, 73 union parishads, 2 municipalities, 18 wards, 9 upazilas, and 14 enclaves.
Bhabani Pathak and Devi Chaudharani staged a coup against the British. Among the dense trees, they constructed their hidden hermitages. Throughout the years 1760–1783, they engaged in several encounters with the British and their allies. Kurigram was the hub for the Quit-India, Tebhaga, and Satyagraha movements. Raumari, Rajibpur (apart from the Kodalkati union), and Phulbari upazilas were beyond the Pakistani army’s grasp during the War of Independence. In this district, there were numerous direct clashes between the Freedom Fighters and the Pakistani army, in which roughly 100 Freedom Fighters perished. Kurigram has been an agricultural land since the beginning of time. Rice, jute (known as the “golden fiber of Bangladesh”), wheat, tobacco, potatoes, and other agricultural goods are the main exports. They employ an irrigation system to grow many high-yielding kinds of rice during the winter when the groundwater level is often lower than during the wet season. By keeping agricultural products, particularly potatoes throughout the hot summer months, several cold storages help boost the district’s economy.
