The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is a group of volunteers who work together to help people in need. The IFRC was founded in 1916 after World War I. In the 1920s and 1930s, the IFRC helped people in Europe after the war. In the 1960s and 1970s, the IFRC helped people in Africa after the war. In the 1990s and 2000s, the IFRC helped people in the Middle East after the war. Today, the IFRC helps people in over 100 countries.
The IFRC was founded in 1919 in Paris after World War I. It was originally called the League of Red Cross Societies, and was created by Henry Davison, the president of the American Red Cross War Committee. Davison called together the founding members of the League of Red Cross Societies—France, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, and the United States—to discuss how their experiences during wartime could be useful in peacetime. Together, they agreed that the compassion and dedication shown by Red Cross volunteers during wartime could help people in need. The League was founded with the goal of improving the health and well-being of people who had been affected by war. In addition, the League wanted to help existing Red Cross societies and help create new ones around the world. The League worked to help people in trouble in Europe, Russia, and Japan. In 1983, the League of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies joined together to form the IFRC. In 1991, the IFRC existed.
